Neodymium Magnets Materials Shortage in the Future

by Stanford Magnets

Neodymium magnets were discovered in 1982, by General Motors, Sumitomo Special Metals and the China Academy of Science. They were developed in response to the high price of Samarium-Cobalt magnets, and they are now the strongest and cheapest of the RE magnets.

Excellent physical properties at light, electric, magnetic make Neodymium magnets used widely in manufacturing industry and military. Many science and technology products need rare earth magnet including Neodymium magnet.

China is the largest exporter of finished neodymium magnets, and the United States is one of the main consumers. On May 15, the United States magazine National Defense says the United States import "almost completely dependent on Chinese rare earth". The article says, from battery to precision bombs, almost all weapon equipments needing Neodymium magnets have to rely on China. However, prices for used in Rare-earth magnets (REEs) have recently risen dramatically due to the increasing demand and reduced supply from China, by far the world’s largest producer of REEs. This upward surge is supposed to continue in the future. In a report released by the U.S. Department of Energy, it was estimated that the widespread use of electric-drive vehicles and offshore wind farms could cause shortages of these REEs by 2015.

It will affect enormous influence on commercial and defense to United State once China cut off the supply chain.

Stanford Magnets is a California based company that has been involved in R&D, manufacturing and sales of permanent magnets since the mid 1980s. We supply licensed Rare-earth permanent magnets, NdFeB and SmCo magnets in particular, and magnetic assemblies in a wide range of shapes, sizes and grades.
